Lisa began her studies of yoga in 1985 with David Life and Sharon Gannon of Jivamukti Yoga and has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga since 1992. She made her first trip to Mysore, India to study with Sri. K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois in 1993.
AYURVEDA & YOGA
I began yoga asana in an attempt to heal my body from the demands I experienced from dancing professionally. I didn’t know anything of the tradition of Yoga and what the practices were meant for. I was shocked by the end of my first class. Sensations from my body and mind collapsed my understanding of what I knew about myself.
I was compelled to begin again to look at myself and through beginning a traditional practice of yoga from people such yoga greats as Robert Moses ( Sivananda tradition), David Life and Sharon Gannon ( Jivamukti Yoga), and my primary teacher Sri K Pattabhi Jois I was set on a path that has not only changed my direction but my orientation and serves me to see the possibility of enlightenment.
In 1986 I took my first asana class and met David and Sharon of Jivamukti Yoga. David and Sharon have always encouraged me to inquire into the nature of myself and how that could serve me as well as all beings. By 1990 I was in South India studying at the Sivananda ashram in Kerala. The stories from the Vedas and scriptures from Bhagavad Gita, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and Hatha Yoga Pradipika started to widen my vision for compassion and my passion in the Yoga practices. The Yoga became my therapy as well as a source of study to find the truth of this life. The commitment to yoga practices came naturally and I became devoted not to waste this one life.
I met Sri K Pattabhi Jois in 1992 and had some deeper experiences of the benefits of yoga practice under his guidance. He blessed me to teach Ashtanga Yoga in the practice of Parampara( succession from Guru to student) in 1997.
Dr Vasant Lad became my teacher of Ayurveda in 1998 when I traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico and Pune India to study with him. Ayurveda fills in many rough edges that the strict practices of yoga do not speak to. Taking care of the body, emotions, and mind with diet, routine, right relationship and conscious relationship with the world are foundations of a yoga practice that can benefit all beings.
Now almost 30 years later and over 12 trips to India , my passion continues to expand. I am still practicing the traditional sequences of the Ashtanga lineage and feel the blessing of my teacher inspiring me to begin again and inquire now after three decades of practice, how to be passionate and awake and serve from that place.
I have recently landed in Phoenix Arizona to be of service to my parents. I owe more than just this life to them but the teachings of yoga and wisdom are a constant stream from them to me.
